Description
Chinna Maddaiah used to work in the mines as a daily wage labourer. Sometimes he used to go with the heavy truckers to drive a vehicle from one state to another state. During that time he got affected HIV /AIDS. He passed away with this dreadful disease. Mother Madhu Shankari also got affected HIV from her husband. Father was an asset to the family. Now the grandparents are also not accepting children including Madhu Shankari. Hemalatha is very intelligent in studies. No one in the Village is allowing this family into their homes let alone helping them or supporting them. Madhu Shankari developed suicidal tendencies and attempted suicide two times. The only thing that stopped her from suicide was her girl children. Due to ill-health, the mother started to force Hemalatha to do to work so that she can feed the family. But Hemalatha is very active in studies, sports & games. A Community Coordinator identified this girl child and was responsible for bringing her to the Joy Home. She found support in her neighbour Rajeswari & aunt Prameela who were broad-minded. Both of them started looking out for child care centres and enquired about such homes. They zeroed down at JoyHome, found that is the best place to leave Hemalatha.
Impact
As a young girl, Hemalatha understood that her ill-health mother and family were unable to work. She has joined Joy Home where she was able to overcome these hurdles in her life and continued her education. She said the organizers from the Joy Home Children Orphanage (through SERUDS Charity) are godlike as they provided nutritious food, shelter, quality education, hygienic environment and medical support. When asked what she likes at JOY HOME she says she likes Study Hour support/teacher at home, Food and especially outdoor meetings. Hemalatha is a curious child and good at studies. She wants to grow up and become a Doctor one day.
